AMG was founded as a racing engine forge in 1967 under the name AMG Motorenbau by former Mercedes engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher near Stuttgart in Germany. AMG started off by designing and testing racing engines. They expanded their business into building bespoke road cars, based upon standard Mercedes cars but it wasn’t until 1993 that the first true AMG Mercedes Benz was unveiled with the C36.

All AMG Mercedes Benz engines are built by hand, using a “one man, one engine” philosophy at the current AMG plant in Affalterbach, Germany. To signify this, each AMG engine builder stamps the engines they produce with an engraved plaque depicting their signature. As part of the official Mercedes product line, the AMG models are sold side-by-side with regular production models.
The main engine stalwart for the AMG Mercedes Benz was a 5.5 L V8 engine, designated the M113, that carried the “55″ designation. This engine came in two configurations. The first configuration was a naturally aspirated V8 and the second a supercharged version. AMG phased out both the naturally aspirated and supercharged 5.4 L engines in favor of the new M156 V8 beginning in 2006.
Current models of the AMG Mercedes Benz include the SLK55 and G55, the G signifying the turbo charged version. In the mid size range, there are the SL63 & E63 and also the super sleek and sporty CLK63 Black Series.
To take us into the future, released in November 2009 in Germany and due in the Spring of 2010 in the U.S. is the the new gull winged AMG Mercedes Benz SLS. It will have a 6.3 liter V8 engine developing 571hp at 6800rpm and an electronically limited top speed of 197mph.
