With over one hundred years in service, Harley Davidson is pinned the most popular and respected motorcycle manufacturer in the United States. 1903 was the beginning of Harley\’s motorcycle debut. Blossoming from military and racing bikes, Harley Davidson is best known for the leisure roadster. Milwaukee, Wisconsin was Harley Davidson\’s birthplace and it\’s reminded of the birth every year when motorcycle enthusiasts converge there.
Founded by William Harley and Arthur Davidson in 1903, the first Harley was built in Wisconsin in a tiny wood shed. Growing success led to the1904 opening of the first Harley Davidson dealership by C.H. Lang in Chicago, Illinois. And, did you know that the first Harley Davidson motorcycle was purchased in Milwaukee by Henry Meyer?
1905 was a watershed year for the Harley Davidson Company. That\’s when Harley won its first motorcycle race. After getting the taste of a victory, Harley Davidson continued to enter off-road races, lap races, and endurance competitions. 1913 saw the creation of the Harley Davidson racing department.
By 1917, the United States Military purchased about 1/3 of all Harleys and that number continued to grow. Within a year 50% of all military motorcycles were purchased from the Harley Davidson Company. Historians tout that World War One was fought with the help of twenty thousand motorcycles with the majority of the motorcycles being Harleys. In 1983 the Harley Owners Group (commonly known as H.O.G.) was formed. This group holds the title of the largest motorcycle club in history. Membership in H.O.G. grew to more than 500,000 by the year 2000 and is only expected to continue to expand.
With the continued pattern of success 2010 is setting up to be another record year for the Harleys. With gas prices soaring and the economy plummeting, Harley\’s stylist flare and economic feasibility will lead to more sales and continued success!
